Overview

Mountains constitute a large percentage of the environment in Oman. Consequently, flora and fauna living in these mountains vary. Al Hajar Mountains are north of Oman and extend from the Musandam Peninsula to Ras Al Hadd in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate. Wadi Samail divides it into two parts – east and west. The summit of Jabal Shams (Sun Mountain) is the highest point in the Al Hajar Mountains, rising at an altitude of 3,009 meters above sea level.

In the south, the mountains of the Dhofar region extend from east to west off AlHillaniyat Islands. Samhan Mountain, which includes the Arabian Leopard Reserve in the east and Jabal Al Qamar (Moon Mountain) in the west, is the most prominent mountain range in the region, rising to an altitude of 2,500 meters.

These mountains offer different options for mountain tourism. Canyoning, caving, hiking, climbing, exploring wildlife, and visiting old mountainous villages are some activities that Oman mountains offer to visitors. This four-day program takes you to the heart of Oman mountains, where you will see the famous Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain) and Jabal Shamas, in addition to visiting some of the most spectacular villages, wadis, and canyons.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Leave Muscat for the Green Mountain. On the way to Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), there is a stop at Birkat Almooz to see Falaj Alkhatmain (a traditional irrigation system and world heritage site) and Bait Alrudida Fort. Then we head up to Jabal Al Akhdhar (arrive there around 1 pm) to check into the hotel and have lunch. There is free time in the evening. Optional activities include walking around the area, enjoying the hotel's facilities, hiking, cycling, watching the stars, and enjoying the quietness and clean air of the mountains. Overnight will be spent at the Jabal Al Akhdhar hotel.
Day 2:
After having breakfast and checking out of the hotel, there is a half-day trip to the villages of Wadi Bani Habib and Siq to watch the green terrace fields. These fields have rose bushes that bloom in March every year. There are several hiking and off-roading trails across the mountain top that can be explored before going to Nizwa, the capital of old Oman. There you will check into the Nizwa Golden Tulip Hotel. There is a tour in Nizwa to see the Nizwa Fort, Nizwa Suq, and Alaqar old village. You will spend the night at the hotel.
Day 3:
Leave for Alhamra. You will visit the Alhamra old town and then head to Misfat Al Abriyeen, one of the most beautiful traditional Omani villages. The picturesque Misfah Al Abriyeen is the perfect place to experience traditional Omani life. Walking along the falaj will make you feel like you just got out of a time machine. Next, you will go to Jabal Shams. Before heading up to the mountain, you will have a short trip to Oman Grand Canyon in Wadi Alnakhar, where you experience the magnificence of the canyon on the ground and from the top of the mountain. We expect to arrive at the mountain around 2 pm, check into Jabal Shams Resort ( or Sama Resort), and have lunch. Then the tour begins around the summits of Jabal Shams, Jabal Almarat, and Jabal Alsurat, where you will see one of the greatest grand canyons in Arabia. Options for hiking or cycling are also available. At the end of this busy day, you will stay overnight in Jabal Shams.
Day 4:
Leave Jabal Shams for Barakrt Alsharaf, then to Wadi Bani Auf via the scenic village of Balad Sait. In Wadi Bani Awf, you will have to swim or jump, but excitement is guaranteed! The road goes along a 5-meter-wide path that is more than 100 meters high in places. There are wires connecting both sides of the wad, which the adventurous use to cross from one side to the other. In the evening, we will head to Muscat.
